When you are ready to build a wind generator one of the items that you need to pick up is a DC motor. Many people have asked us where do you find a good motor for a wind generator.

The simple answer for that is eBay. eBay offers every sort of imaginable piece of hardware out there and they do offer DC motors that work well with wind generators.

Here is what you are looking for in a DC motor for your wind generator. You're looking for a permanent magnet DC motor. You will have to pay attention to these details: RPM's, shaft size, amps, and voltage.

When used as generators DC motors have to spun far faster then they're rated for to produce the power they're rated for as input. Your DC motor should be rated for high DC voltage, low RPM's and high current.

You'll want a motor that puts out a little over 12 volts at low RPM, as well as a useful level of current. A motor that is rated for 325 RPM's and 30 volts when used as a generator should produce 12+ volts at 325 RPM.

As a general rule of thumb look for a DC motor with RPM rating of under 400. The shaft size should be over 5/8" as that will ensure that your DC motor can withstand the pounding that they sometimes take. Look for a voltage rating of 30 - 80 volts. This will ensure that your wind generator will be able to produce 12 volts at low RPM.

As you can see, finding a DC motor for your wind generator isn't as hard as you think. eBay is a great place to find them.
